Brick-slips Made in Germany
TONWERK: Our origin story
Tonwerk stands for high-quality brick slips made in Germany. The brand develops ceramic facade elements for modern architecture, combining technical precision with a clear design ambition.
As part of the Interbau-Blink Group, Tonwerk has its roots in the Westerwald – a region that has been closely associated with the extraction and processing of clay for centuries. This geographical and industrial heritage continues to shape the brand today and forms the foundation for the development of modern ceramic products.
Brick Slips for Contemporary Architecture
Tonwerk brick slips enable an authentic clinker facade appearance in a wide range of formats, surfaces and color nuances, achieved through advanced ceramic manufacturing processes such as extrusion and digital printing. They are particularly used in external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS), as well as in new construction and renovation projects.
Thanks to their minimal material thickness and reduced weight, they offer versatile possibilities in facade design without compromising the visual impact of traditional clinker brick. In architectural applications, they combine functionality with creative freedom and are ideal for buildings where a durable, authentic material surface is a key requirement.
The Origin of the Name Tonwerk
The name Tonwerk is directly derived from both the material and the origin of the brand. The Westerwald location is traditionally characterized by abundant clay deposits and a strong connection to the ceramic industry. “Ton” refers to the natural raw material that forms the basis of production, while “Werk” describes the industrial manufacturing and processing.
The idea for the name and the resulting brand identity originated from the former Managing Director, Michael Dickopf. Based on this concept, Tonwerk was established as an independent brand with the ambition to understand architectural ceramics not merely as a product, but as a versatile material system for architecture. Over time, this brand identity was consistently refined and strategically developed together with Managing Director Olaf Mayer.
