Distinctive Design in Every Format

Tonwerk formats

A facade defines a building’s identity – Tonwerk brick-slips add expression, durability and a unique signature. Beyond colour and surface texture, the chosen format is a key design element: Shaping proportions, visual impact and the overall character of any surface

Manufactured in Germany, Tonwerk brick-slips combine timeless aesthetics with exceptional durability. The classic standard format (NF) offers a balanced, traditional look; the refined thin format (DF) creates a lighter, more delicate appearance; and the striking long format (LF40) emphasises modern linearity and architectural clarity. Each format has its own distinctive appeal, enabling truly bespoke designs. Tonwerk-Compact with an overview of our formats.

All dimensions are listed as length x width x thickness (mm). Custom-made corners and special pieces are available upon request.

A Quick Look at Our Standard Formats

  • NF – Standard Format (240 × 71 mm): The timeless classic for balanced, harmonious façades.

  • DF – Thin Format (240 × 52 mm): Slim and elegant, ideal for contemporary architecture with clean lines.

  • LDF – Long Thin Format (290 × 52 mm):  An extended thin format that lends facades a subtle horizontal emphasis and modern lightness.

  • LF40 – Long Format (468 × 40 mm): An exclusive highlight. Its slender proportions and impressive length create a refined, sophisticated appearance with strong horizontal definition.

Bold Format for Modern Facade Design

Expertise in Long Format

The LF40 long format (468 x 40 mm) represents sophisticated architecture with a clear design language.

With a height of approximately 40 mm and an above-average length, this format imparts a unique elegance and dynamism to facades.

It is ideally suited for contemporary new builds as well as high-quality renovations of existing structures.

In facade design, the LF40 format creates a broad, calm appearance. The slender silhouette of the individual bricks emphasizes horizontal lines, resulting in a timeless aesthetic.

The Right Bond Pattern for Your Facade

Brick-Slip Bond Patterns

Whether traditional, modern or bespoke – the brick-slip bond pattern plays a decisive role in shaping the appearance of your facade. It influences the overall look just as much as colours and formast do. Tonwerk brick-slips offer maximum design freedom: Durable, colourfast and compatible with all common insulation standards.

Thanks to the variety of formats, Tonwerk brick-slips can be laid in numerous bond patterns, giving facades their own distinct rhythm — calm and uniform, lively and textured or elegantly minimalist.

Below, we present the most popular bond patterns, explain their unique characteristics, and illustrate how they interact with different brick-slip formats.

Vibrant facades with architectural sophistication

Random bond

The Random Bond is an intentionally irregular laying pattern that gives facades a naturally lively and handcrafted appearance.

Its appeal lies in the balance between creative freedom and subtle rules that ensure a harmonious overall look.

The use of "headers" (also known as "bonders") is typically achieved by manually cutting individual brick-slips to half their length; special header formats are generally not required.

The random bond gives facades a handcrafted, dynamic surface effect, making it especially suitable for projects aiming for a rustic, natural, or historically inspired style. At the same time, this bond offers economic advantages: its flexible joint pattern reduces cutting effort and allows for resource-efficient installation. The random bond can be executed with all Tonwerk brick-slip formats.

A Timeless Classic with Flexible Rhythm

HALF-BRICK BOND

The half-brick bond, also known as running bond, is the most commonly used masonry pattern and has shaped the appearance of facades worldwide for centuries.

Its defining feature is the continuous horizontal mortar joint, while the vertical joints are regularly staggered.

This clear linear arrangement conveys calmness, order, and timeless elegance.

Half-brick bond

Half-brick bond | Format LF40

In the half-brick bond, all brick-slips are arranged in horizontal rows, with vertical joints offset by half the length of a brick-slip. This creates a calm, harmonious joint pattern. The visual effect of the half-brick bond can be controlled by adjusting the offset of the vertical joints, resulting in a consistent and very balanced joint structure.

The stretcher bond is suitable for all Tonwerk brick-slip formats – from the classic standard format (NF) and the slim thin format (DF) to modern long formats such as 290 × 52 mm (LDF) or 468 × 40 mm (LF40). The exact joint width and chosen offset provide architects with additional opportunities to emphasize proportions or vary the overall surface effect.
